What is Lyme Disease?
Lyme Disease is one of the most common tick-transmitted diseases in the world. It is caused by a bacteria species of the b. burgdorferi group that can attack many systems in your pet’s body. Two different kinds of ticks are known for transmitting the disease. In the Northeastern US that tick is usually the Deer Tick (Ixodes scapularis), and on the West Coast it is the Western Black Legged Tick (Ixodes pacificus). Lyme Disease is a perplexing condition because it can present itself in so many different ways, and because it usually produces no immediate symptoms in most pets, it makes it even more confusing. In the US, more than 90% of the Lyme cases occur in the Northeast and North Central States. Northwestern California and Mississippi also see a large number of positive animals.

Signs and symptoms of Lyme Disease
Be sure to consult your veterinarian if you begin noticing any signs or symptoms of Lyme Disease or if your pet has been bit by a tick. It is important to let a qualified veterinarian remove the tick so that the head of the tick does not break off and remain lodged in the pets skin.
